Words that reveal
your accent

“Water,” “better,” “car,” “bath,” and “about” can expose how you shape a vowel, treat an R or T, or move between syllables. Each word is a clue—not proof of where you are from.

Five words, many possibilities

Listen for the movement

01

water

The vowel, the middle consonant, and the final R can all vary.

02

better

The middle T may stay crisp, become a quick flap, or change in another systematic way.

03

car

The presence, absence, or quality of the final R can be revealing.

04

bath

The vowel can highlight a regional split, especially among varieties of English in Britain.

05

about

Both vowel movements add evidence, although familiar stereotypes are often exaggerated.

Words need context

Sentences tell the fuller story
